Games don't cause violence. But for some of us, violent games can trigger a traumatic response, from PTSD or our past experiences or anxiety. Which makes gaming a heck of a lot less fun. Alt-Arcade is a monthly curation of just 4 non-violent games that can let you grab a controller while still looking after your emotional and mental wellbeing ✨

Alt-arcade updates with 4 curated games, every month! 💖

Unravel

I was introduced to this game just the other day. It took me a little while to get into it, but I downloaded it on Xbox one and played it at 2 in the morning when sleep eluded me. And it was beautiful. And calm. And peaceful. And pure. The game follows the adventures of a small yarn creature, and the way its presented is both soothing and breathtaking. ✨

Kind Words

To call Kind Words a game almost feels like selling it short. It's a community, and an experience and an experiment. In your room, you trade letters and concerns and fears and worries and hopes and dreams, and other humans can write too. You can trade stickers and little thoughts, and there's something truly wonderful about it. It feels like one of the most #selfcare games I've ever purchased. 10/10 honestly. This is empathy distilled into video game form. ✨

Flower

In Flower, the gamer takes on the role of the wind, guiding and gently moving a flower petal, interacting with its environment in an air of zen artistry and composure. The beauty in Flower is not simply its visuals but in the loose and flowing "gameplay" that allows you to feel as though you are in slow and simple command of a majestic breath. ✨

Bernband

I don't quite know what to tell you about Bernband. It's a little alien city, from an unnamed space opera, where you can just roam free and find odd little spots, quirky nooks and crannies and places to relax, chill and kick back. There's not much to do, except simply wander. I don't see anything wrong with a notion like that at all. Every now and then I just pick it up and walk around for a little while my mind works on a problem or struggles with an emotional spike. ✨

Stardew valley

This is such a gorgeous game. and it's so far removed from anything that would normally set off anxiety triggers for me. it's calm and it's constructive and while you're playing it there is a real sense of growth and wellness. plus who doesn't love farming! stardew is one of those games I can keep coming back to again and again, and it never gets old. Every time I play it, I just feel at home. ✨

alto's odyssey

I am not joking when I say that Alto's Odyssey is my favourite game, on any platform, ever. I can play it for hours and let the simplicity and the beauty of the graphics, the engine, the art and the sound design whisk me away. Thoroughly gorgeous piece of work. it's a casual game too, so you can pick it up in a moment of stress or crisis without being too overwhelmed by complications, controls or loading screens. I need that every now and then. It's on apple tv, android and of course iphone/ipad. ✨

firewatch

The slow pace and slowly developing story can get you really hooked into this game. it's not something you want to pick up and just have a go at though, it's a game to invest time, energy and attention into. You won't regret it. Basically, you take the role of a firewatcher in a national forest, and your goal is to investigate goings on, manage the woods and wilderness and explore your surroundings. Narrative driven and mysterious. ✨

journey

Journy is an experience unto itself. If there were ever a definitive argument for the game as an art-form, this is it. your character is a robed figure, travelling through a lonely wilderness, through ruins and panoramas, searching for a distant mountain. to say more would be to spoil the esoteric beauty of the story and the atmosphere. but it is truly incredible.✨
